Frequently Asked Questions

Why is there a $5/month subscription?

This app uses powerful AI models (like Google's Gemini) to generate unique text and images for each story, and there are costs associated with using these models and hosting the application. The small subscription fee helps cover these basic operational costs. Importantly, this project was built by the Women Defining AI community primarily as a learning tool and showcase; any profits generated beyond covering costs go directly back into supporting our mission to empower women and non-binary individuals in technology and AI.

How are the stories made appropriate for my child's reading level?

When you select a reading level (Kindergarten or 1st Grade), we instruct the AI model to use specific vocabulary lists (based on common early reader words like Dolch and Fry lists) and to follow guidelines for simple sentence structures suitable for that age group. While AI generation can sometimes vary, the goal is to create stories that are engaging and accessible for emergent readers.

Can I try this without a subscription?

Yes! Since this app was created to showcase possibilities and encourage learning within the Women Defining AI community, you can access the original open-source prototype if you're comfortable getting your own Google Gemini API key. You can run the prototype app here: reading-story-creator.vercel.app. Or, explore the code on GitHub here: GitHub Project. The subscription version simply offers a more streamlined experience without needing your own API key setup.

How can I support the Women Defining AI community and mission?

Women Defining AI aims to level the playing field for women and non-binary individuals by closing the technology gap and changing who leads the conversation around innovative tech like AI.
